Concrete condition survey on Liverpool's waterfront.

The Baltic Triangle on Liverpool’s waterfront was abandoned in 2007, but fresh plans are now being drawn up for the £65m development of a luxury hotel and apartments.

Testconsult were called upon to carry out a condition survey of the existing, abandoned concrete and steel structure to assess its current state and to provide the client with key information needed to aid the re-development work.

The investigation required two teams of engineers to undertake extensive testing and examination of the framework structures in place. A variety of testing techniques were deployed including, ferroscan surveys to determine depth and spacing of reinforcement; diamond drilling of the concrete elements to provide samples for laboratory compressive strength evaluation; rebound hammer survey to selected beams, columns, slabs, and walls to provide comparative strengths, depth of carbonation testing and also corrosion surveys coupled with extensive visual inspections.
