Proof load testing

Proof load testing by JFTS includes a range of stress testing techniques to demonstrate the ultimate strength of a load bearing structure.

Proof load testing provides a conclusive method in proving a structures capacity to carry or resist loads, to strict pre-defined regulations. Loads are applied either dynamically or statically, depending on the testing requirements, using a variety of non-destructive loading techniques.

Typical proof load testing applications include:

Floor load tests are designed to measure the load bearing capacity of a structure and can be used to help determine whether the load capacities of floors or slabs are suitable for their purpose. Our static load testing techniques can be applied to structures including floors and slabs in multi-storey car parks, new purpose structures and bridges.

We test to the following regulatory standards:

  • BS 8110: 1997: Structural Use of Concrete – Code of practice for design. 
  • The Institution of Civil Engineers The Inspection and Maintenance of Multi-Storey Car Parks, July 2000
  • BS EN 12825:2001: Raised Access Floors

Static and dynamic proof load tests can be completed on car park barriers to test the resistance of barriers and identify any performance failures. By load testing car park barriers it can provide confidence that their design and installation delivers safety to vehicles and people in and around car parks.  

We test to the following regulatory standards:

  • BS 6180:1999; Code of Practice for Barriers in and about Buildings
  • BS 7818 : 1985; Specification for pedestrian restraint systems in metal
  • BS EN 13374: 2004; Temporary edge protection systems

Proof load testing of lighting columns can enable installation errors or metal corrosion to be identified. By completing proof load tests on lighting columns it can be used to evaluate the condition of lighting columns and determine if they have any structural damage which could cause them to collapse.

Our proof load tests on anchorage points can be completed to test the performance and strength of anchors used in construction. Using anchor testing can help identify whether anchors are performing correctly and functioning safely. With our in-situ testing of anchorage, it can help ensure construction safety and highlight any installation errors.  

We test to the following regulatory standards:

  • British Standard BS 8539:2012 Code of Practice for the selection and installation of post-installed anchors in concrete and masonry.

We can also provide proof load testing for hand rails to test rail strength and resistance against loads after their installation. Our in-situ testing means that newly installed and existing hand rails, including stair rails and balcony guard rails, can be checked to ensure that they are safe for their purpose.

  • BS 6180:1999/2011: Code of Practice for Barriers in and about Buildings

Load testing of lift shaft beams can be completed to check that beams have a safe load capacity. Our in-situ proof load testing can be completed to ensure that the installation of lift shaft beams is correct or to check the load capacity for routine verification.

  • The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (L.O.L.E.R 1998)
